Title Open Rank Faculty Position in Teacher Preparation
School Harvard Graduate School of Education
Department/Area
Position Description

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites scholars who conduct research on teacher preparation to apply for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Education, Associate Professor of Education (untenured), or Professor of Education (tenured).

We seek candidates who conduct methodologically rigorous studies of innovative approaches to teacher preparation. We are particularly interested in appointing a colleague who studies novel structures and activities in teacher preparation programs, whether those programs be housed within universities or elsewhere. This includes scholars who study: the design of prospective teachers’ educational experiences; teaching simulations and rehearsals of practice; the provision of structured feedback on videos or observations of practice; teaching with cases; preparing teachers via particular taxonomies of practices and techniques; methods for preparing teachers to reach all students; and the translation between teacher preparation experiences and classroom practice. Scholars of teacher learning, construed more broadly, are also encouraged to apply if their work carries implications for teacher preparation. We welcome applicants who take generalist approaches to teacher preparation as well as those embedded in specific subject matter like reading, mathematics or science. We especially encourage applications from women and minorities.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should have a doctorate in education or a related field. Successful candidates will have an excellent record of rigorous scholarship appropriate for rank and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. Candidates for a ladder faculty appointment will be considered if they will complete all requirements for the doctorate by the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

Additional Qualifications

Harvard has small but robust programs of teacher education at the master’s and undergraduate level. Successful candidates should expect to become involved in these programs by playing a leadership role, by teaching methods courses, or by conducting research in conjunction with the program.

At HGSE, our mission is to conduct high-quality research on issues related to education, and to teach, advise, and mentor a diverse community of graduate students, both at the doctoral and master’s levels. We therefore seek candidates with excellent pedagogical skills, including the ability to engage students in classroom discussions and other non-lecture forms of learning. Candidates should be well-prepared to engage in collaborative or supervised research with graduate students interested in the practice of preparing teachers.

Special Instructions

The committee will request letters of recommendation and evidence of effective teaching from a small group of finalists. The search committee will begin reviewing applications on October 15, 2017 and continue until the position is filled.
