Position Description

The Department of Music seeks to appoint a tenure-track professor in Composition, with an emphasis on theater and/or media and/or mixed media collaborations. The appointment is expected to be made at the Assistant Professor level and to begin on July 1, 2018. The tenure-track professor will be responsible for teaching and advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including graduate analysis for composers, graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and introductory and upper-level undergraduate composition courses in the broadest range of styles and genres in theater, media and/or mixed media collaborations. The ideal candidate will design courses suitable for cross-listing with the Theater, Dance and Media (TDM) undergraduate concentration.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must have either a) a doctorate or terminal degree in Composition or related discipline or b) comparable experience and artistic distinction by the time the appointment begins. 

Additional Qualifications

Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching is desired.

5. Names and contact information of 3 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Please make sure referees are informed well before you submit. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
6. Please provide THREE representative samples of your creative work of no more than 15 minutes duration each. These samples may be extracts of a larger work or a complete work. You may submit performance recordings or scores in pdf format, or a combination:
• For performance recordings, please do not upload media files onto ARIeS, as the portal does not have space for them. Using the optional URL document, upload a pdf with 1-3 hyperlinks to audio/visual material, and keep hyperlinks active until at least the end of April 2018.
• For scores, submit them in pdf format through the ARIeS portal using Writing Samples 1-3.
• If pdf format for scores is likely to be illegible online, you may send scores to the departmental address below, marked “composition search.” Scores mailed to the department will not be returned.
